Here are just a few of the many comments that the North Shore Waterfront Industrial Association has received from teachers following their experience with the North Shore Waterfront program:
This program is a valuable contribution to the Social Studies program. We had been focussing on Canada and its neighbours, particularly trade, using Vancouver harbour as a focus.
We like the students to get out and experience their environment. The harbour tour enables the children to see the harbour from a perspective they normally wouldn't have. The industry rep also brought a real world perspective to our studies.
The children really enjoyed the harbour tour especially the dancing tugboats.
The entire program is great. I have been waiting for years for such an awesome program!!
There was so much offered. The children had hands on material for the first session.
It fits in well with the curriculum and is an excellent way to introduce resources.
I liked the way the students were involved at all times.
It was a good introduction to our harbour. Variety of resources: maps, slides, overheads and export products had important information that kept the students focussed.
We are doing a “Critical Thinking” unit on choosing how to best use a forest. On the tour we could see consequences of actual decisions of land use in the harbour.
Well organized. Lots of helpful and friendly assistance. Kids get a lot from the field trip.
The ship was warmer, drier and more comfortable than I expected.
We’ve talked, we’ve mapped, but it’s wonderful to be on the water ‘looking back’.
We’re studying our community in the past so Moodyville, and the mills, trains and lumber tied in beautifully. Visually compare today’s waterfront with the past.
It exceeded out expectations. We are all very impressed with the level of organization, and professionalism of everyone involved. Everyone was helpful and the tour itself was informative – we loved the running commentary.
If I knew long enough in advance I would build a very strong social studies unit around this theme with the boat trip as a finale.
Thanks for an excellent and memorable experience – we (teachers, parents and students) all had a great time. We really appreciated the concern you showed for our seasick little friend.
Information was technical but very interesting and appropriately presented. I liked the safety aspect because we are very aware of safety measures.
Thanks to all of you for letting us participate in such a terrific project. This is a very worthwhile initiative, and I hope it will continue to develop. It is obvious that many people have put time, effort and money into the program and we appreciate it being offered to our students.
It was excellent to see so many slides (pictures) of things we see all the time but never really looked at. I also liked the hands-on visuals for students to see + the active involvement of the class thru out the presentation.
We learned about other countries, import and export & this helped to connect us better to our own community.
I think it is a good concept and an excellent presentation to involve students in their community and realize what a wonderful place we live in.
